📄 What is the Digital Nomad Residence Permit in Spain?
Digital Nomad Residence Permit in Spain - residence permit for remote workers that allows you to live and work in Spain while maintaining employment with foreign companies. It is suitable for freelancers, entrepreneurs, and remote employees.
The residence permit is issued for three years and then extended for two more. After five years of living in Spain, you can obtain permanent residence, which does not require any additional grounds.
📨 Main requirements for obtaining a residence permit
- Not an EU citizen: The residence permit is only available to citizens of non-EU countries.
- Remote work or services for a foreign company: Requires official employment, a contract, or registration as a self-employed professional with a foreign legal entity that has been operating for more than 1 year.
- Ability to work remotely: The work must be fully remote, without the need for physical presence in an office.
- Sufficient income: The main applicant must have a minimum monthly income of €2,763 (200% of the Spanish minimum wage). The UGE may consider income over 14 months. For a spouse, an additional 75% of SMI is required, and 25% of SMI for each child.
- Work experience: The applicant must have worked with the current employer or client for at least 3 months before applying.
- Employer stability: The employer (or registered company) must have existed for at least 1 year.
- No criminal record: The applicant must have no criminal record in their country of residence for the past 5 years.
- Legal stay in Spain: The application can only be submitted while legally residing in Spain, for example, on a visa or with a residence permit from another Schengen country.

- Residence permit: valid for up to 3 years and can be obtained while in Spain.
- Visa: valid for up to 1 year and requires submitting the application through the Spanish consulate.

- Document collection: Takes from 3 to 14 days.
- Submitting the application in Spain: Documents are submitted online using a digital signature, but each applicant (including spouses and children) must be legally present in Spain at the time of submission with valid grounds.

- Decision waiting time: Maximum processing time is 20 working days (around 4 weeks).
- Receiving the residence card: The process takes from 30 days after approval.
- Schedule an appointment at the police office.

- Collect the residence cards 3–5 weeks later (maximum 30–35 days) after fingerprinting. Cards must be collected in person by everyone who provided fingerprints.
