A practical step-by-step guide for Digital Nomads, Entrepreneurs and their family members under Spain’s Law 14/2013
Last updated: 2 October 2026
This guide applies after your Spanish residence authorization has already been approved. It covers the process of obtaining the physical TIE — Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero.
Once your residence permit has been approved, obtaining the physical TIE is usually straightforward.
| Step | What you need to do |
|---|---|
| 1 | Book a police appointment for fingerprints |
| 2 | Prepare your documents |
| 3 | Attend the appointment in person |
| 4 | Submit fingerprints |
| 5 | Wait for the card to be produced |
| 6 | Collect the TIE in person |
| Stage | Typical timing |
|---|---|
| Finding a fingerprint appointment | Highly variable; sometimes several weeks |
| Card production after fingerprints | Around 15 days |
| Safe estimate before collection | 2–3 weeks |
The main difficulty in late 2026 is usually finding an available police appointment, not the TIE procedure itself.
You need a police appointment — usually called a cita — before you can submit your TIE application.
Use Spain’s official appointment system and select the province where you are eligible to apply.
| Location | Appointment type |
|---|---|
| All provinces | POLICÍA – TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA) INICIAL, RENOVACIÓN, DUPLICADO Y LEY 14/2013 |
| Barcelona and Madrid | The option above or POLICÍA – EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETAS CUYA AUTORIZACIÓN RESUELVE LA DIRECCIÓN GENERAL DE GESTIÓN MIGRATORIA |
For Law 14/2013 applicants in Barcelona and Madrid, either appointment type can be used.
If appointment availability is limited, check both.
There is currently a significant shortage of fingerprint appointments in some provinces.
This is primarily an availability problem. There is no reliable secret method or guaranteed trick for obtaining a slot.
In high-demand locations, finding an appointment may take several weeks and occasionally up to around two months.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Leave a few seconds between submissions | Rapid repeated submissions |
| Refresh with reasonable pauses | Constantly hammering refresh |
| Enter your NIE and phone number carefully | Repeatedly navigating backwards and forwards |
| Stop and retry later after an error | Continuing aggressively after rate limits |
If you receive Too Many Requests, the system may have temporarily rate-limited your connection.
